ThE Listening Room

When a beautiful score, musicians, singers and a story come together…

the sky fills with stars!

The journey of Calling Us Home began in 2014 when composer Alice Gillham sat down at the piano and started writing this inspiring story of empathy, of compassion, of courage and of love. Over the years it has developed into what it is today with the help of so many exceptional people - a grand scale musical that is taking the world by storm.

Deeply embedded in this story, in its DNA, in the lives and voices of the characters are some of the most topical and controversial conversations of our time. These are conversations that go beyond the theatre and the show.

“As music creatives, we wanted to continue to explore these conversations through a collection of Calling Us Home Songs - with different voices, different artists, different viewpoints, different sounds, away from the immediacy of the stage spotlight and in the intimate space of the studio - where we could think a little more, feel a little more… explore a little more…”

Some close friends of Calling Us Home have joined us on this journey, singing a few of our favourite songs from the magnificent score.

Fire In His Kiss (ACT II Scene 15)

The story of ‘Fire In His Kiss

Grace has just witnessed Rafael, being unfairly arrested for a murder he did not commit. Shocked, she tries to tell the police that they have the wrong man, but they refuse to listen. Suddenly he breaks free from the policemen holding him, pulls Grace into his arms, and passionately kisses her. Moments later he is wrested away and Grace is left stunned and alone… It is at this moment that she realises she is in love with him.

The story of ‘Tomorrow

Grace is heartbroken as she has to abandon her home, her family, her whole life due to the outbreak of war in her country. In this song, we find her on the eve of her departure as she looks out at the beauty of the African landscape that is her home and questions what the future might hold.
