The critically acclaimed large-scale musical and in-concert production of CALLING US HOME is set to embark on a groundbreaking multi-country tour across Africa, marking several historic firsts for the region.
‘Calling Us Home’ was previously staged in 2023 in Cape Town, drawing critical and audience acclaim. The success of the production is particularly meaningful, as it is in fact a new, grand-scale musical opera - built entirely in Africa!

Our story begins in Africa...
… where the beating sun bakes the earth and fever trees shimmer in the distance.
At night, the endless sky stretches across a world with stars so bright that they fill your eyes with tears and threaten to break your heart.
Far in the north a civil war is brewing. Fear is spreading and hundreds of people must flee their homeland. Nelson, a young prince of his tribe, decides against his mother’s wishes to join the army to defend his country, while his younger sister Grace must discontinue her medical studies. She must leave her home to find safety on the other side of the world. Together with hundreds of refugees, they say their heartbroken goodbyes, not knowing whether they will ever see each other again.
2025 - 2026 sees the acclaimed original musical ‘Calling Us Home’ tour to multiple countries across the African continent…
Award-winning American director Peter Flynn (“Chess”, “Funny Girl”, “Smart Blonde”, TheatreworksUSA), and writer and composer Alice Gillham (Shy Music, “Clarence Square”) have begun work on adapting the grand-scale musical for the unique challenges and opportunities of touring a cast, a crew and a world-class stage set across the African continent.
Shy Music has partnered with legendary sound designer Mark Malherbe (“Sarafina!”, “West Side Story”, “Orpheus In Africa”) and his Africa-wide company Prosound to embark on this groundbreaking adventure.
