THE GREEN ROOM
Our Commitment to a Greener Tomorrow
We believe that art should not only move people, it should move the world forward. That is why we are taking bold steps to make our productions greener, cleaner, and more responsible.
Going green is not a slogan for us. It is a promise! To our audiences, to our communities, and to the planet we all share.
What can be recycled, must be.
Hello, World!
Every Paper, Every Plastic, Every Tree :
we are Growing Green Together
🌍 South Africa Going Green
From city to city, we are choosing smarter ways to move. By partnering with Volvo and introducing electric vehicles into our logistics, we are actively cutting down on harmful emissions and reducing our touring footprint.
Greener Productions
Behind the curtain, we are transforming the way we work. Energy-efficient lighting, smart stage design, and reduced reliance on single-use materials are becoming our new standard.
Recycling and Re-use
Every production leaves traces. Ours will leave less. We are committed to recycling set materials, repurposing costumes, and reducing plastic use across all departments. What can be re-used, will be. What can be recycled, must be.
HOW WE’RE GOING GREEN
Our sustainability promise starts at home. In our production office, we recycle paper, plastics, and e-waste, while steadily shifting toward a paperless environment. We choose digital over print whenever possible and encourage a culture of mindful consumption across our team.
Sustainable Communities
Our commitment extends beyond the stage. We work with local suppliers, empower young artists, and aim to leave each city we visit a little cleaner and a little stronger than when we arrived.
For selected performances, learners who are unable to pay for a ticket may attend by bringing four (4) clean plastic bottles with caps.
Our Team, Our Planet
Every week, our Calling Us Home and Shy Music family steps off the stage and into the quarry. Together, we roll up our sleeves and care for the earth, because the music we create is born from humanity, and a thriving world inspires every note. We stand for a cleaner planet, for kindness over cruelty, and for a future where humanity, nature, and music flourish together.
OUR JOURNEY TO BOTSWANA
POWERED BY ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Thanks to the generous support of Volvo Cars SA and EVNow ZA, our cast and crew of Calling Us Home – In Concert travelled over 1,100 km from Johannesburg to Gaborone via two electric SUV’s, The Volvo EX90
Their sponsorship helped make this incredible #Green journey possible by powering not just our vehicles, but our shared passion for connecting audiences across borders through the magic of theatre.
Our goal was to prove that electric vehicles can do long distance in nearly any part of the world. Through EVNow ZA and Volvo Cars SA we achieved this by taking ‘Calling Us Home - In Concert’ on wheels.
Given our #Green initiative as a theatre production company that aims to promote the importance of sustainability it was an honour to part take in this groundbreaking journey across Africa.
Electric vehicles represent a strategic opportunity for South Africa’s economy, environment, and citizens. EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, helping to reduce air pollution in our cities and urban centres. As our electricity grid becomes greener, the environmental benefits of EVs will continue to increase.
Plastic for Access Initiative
Turning waste into opportunity
Small actions, multiplied by many hands, create real change.
As part of our #GoingGreen commitment, we are introducing a Plastic for Access initiative when working with under-resourced community schools.
For selected performances, learners who are unable to pay for a ticket may attend by bringing four (4) clean plastic bottles with caps.
These bottles serve as their ticket of entry.
One learner. Four bottles. A seat in the theatre. A lighter footprint on the planet.
This initiative allows us to:
Reduce plastic waste entering landfills
Encourage environmental responsibility at grassroots level
Ensure access to live theatre and music regardless of financial circumstance
All bottles collected are responsibly recycled through our environmental partners, with impact tracked and reported as part of our sustainability goals.
How it Works
Each learner brings 4 clean plastic bottles with caps
Bottles are collected at the venue entrance
Bottles are counted, logged, and sent for recycling
Each collection contributes to our environmental impact tally
Curious how small actions add up?
Test it below. Click the button to simulate one learner attending
by bringing four plastic bottles, and watch how quickly the impact grows.

One learner contributes approximately 0.15kg of CO₂ savings through recycling.
Each learner attending through our Plastic for Access initiative contributes directly to measurable environmental impact.
4 plastic bottles per learner
± 80g of plastic diverted from landfill
± 0.15kg of CO₂ emissions avoided through recycling
When multiplied across schools and performances, these small actions accumulate into tangible environmental outcomes, tracked and reported as part of our sustainability commitments.
This initiative links access to culture with climate responsibility, proving that environmental action does not require exclusion.
Impact in Action
Every step counts. By choosing greener transport, sustainable staging, and recycling practices both in our productions and in our offices, we are already seeing a meaningful reduction in our footprint. And this is just the beginning.
